The 10 Best French Toast Toppings

December 8, 2011 by admin 3 Comments

French toast by itself is rather bland.  That makes it the perfect blank canvas on which to place a wide variety of toppings. Once you master the art of how to make French toast, you’ll need to pick the perfect combination of toppings to ensure your recipe really shines.  It is the combination your choose that will set your particular recipe apart from others.  Here in no particular order are our favorite French toast toppings.

Maple Syrup

Lets start with the a classic.  Maple syrup is the traditional topping for French toast.  Why, because it’s sweet and evenly covers the toast so you get a bit in each bite.  For added flavor, slightly heat the syrup before serving.

Butter

Up there with syrup as a must-have traditional topping is butter.  Toast begs to be buttered, and the French variety is no different.  Put it on when the toast is warm so that the butter melts over, and soaks into, the bread.

Powdered Sugar

Rounding out the trifecta of traditional French toast toppings, we bring you powdered sugar, also known as confectioners sugar.  This finely ground sugar is perfect because it’s not as sweet as regular sugar, and adds an appealing white dusting to the meal.

Fresh Berries

A wonderful healthy addition to your egg-dipped breakfast are fresh berries.  We prefer strawberries, but you can also try blueberries or raspberries.  For the ultimate treat, try all of the above!

Sliced Banana

Another great fruit to try on your French toast are bananas.  They add extra sweetness to the meal which means you can get away with less syrup and powdered sugar if you are watching your sugar intake.

Jam

Jam, or jelly, of any variety is an easy way to give your recipe a boost.  With a variety of flavors from apricot to raspberry to black currant a good jam or jelly will infuse sweet fruit flavors into your French toast.

Whipped Cream

To add some extra sweetness to your French toast, add a dolop of whipped cream.  This small addition will not only make your breakfast feel more like dessert, but it will also make it look more appealing.

Almond Slices

Add some crunch to your morning mean with a dash of almond slices atop your breakfast.  Almonds are a healthy way to make your same old French toast recipes more exciting.

Vanilla Ice Cream

This is the ultimate in delectable toppings. Take you French toast to a whole new level with some ice cream topping.  We recommend vanilla because it doesn’t overpower any other flavors in the meal, instead offering just a small amount of sweetness.

Cinnamon Apple

How you make French toast all depends on your preference.  There are many ways to enjoy French toast. Try these topping to add fun and variety to your breakfast.  Once you’ve tried them all, think of your own topping ideas and let us know what you come up with!
